With Guidance, auto hitch, depth control, seed rate and spray rate controllers Colin and Adrian have had a full system since 1999, 'and probably odds and ends before then.

Colin and Adrian use two seeders, a Horward Bagshaw which is connected to a CASE STX 450, and a Flexi coil connected to a CAT 95E. Both are controlled with a X20 for variable rate seeding. Spraying Trifluralin and roundup off the bar while seeding is also controlled by the X20 on one seeder and a Topcon Mk 5 spray controller on the other. This is a big saving on spraying cost.

"From what I've seen lately Topcon's equipment is by far the simplest to use… even dad who seeds with the Cat and Flexicoil can handle the X20 extremely well, and he can't work a computer! With this system he can be out on the tractor as competent as anyone".

Colin claims his X20 system has benefited him in "heaps of ways"

"The Variable Rate Seeding is a big benefit. To determine rate changes we use a yield map from the header to know where to run a soil test and create a map for variable rate seeding", Colin said.

When asked how this benefits his farming, Colin said "the variable rate seeding allows us to grow better crops with less inputs on our shallow flats and to put the right product in the right spot on our deep sand for the best results".

"Each piece of technology offers its own benefit and at the end of the day we must produce the best crops possible for our inputs and it must be sustainable. This technology allow us to control our cropping programme in a way that was not possible before."

Colin and Adrian farm approximately 20 000 acres a year. While X20 provides economic benefits as well as guaranteed precision farming it also saves time and allows the farmer a peace of mind.

"Our X20 system allows us to save not only money, but time, when running the farm. With the increased productivity it means we can get more done in less time, and at a higher standard", Colin said.
